Okowa Corruption Probe Still Active, Defection Offers No Shield –EFCC

​ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly refuted claims that the investigation into the alleged corruption of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has been dropped following his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The anti-graft agency confirmed that the probe remains “active” and assured that “justice will be served” regardless of the former governor’s political alignment.

​The clarification was made by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters to mark his second anniversary in office.

​Speaking on behalf of the Chairman, the Director of Legal and Prosecution at the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, addressed accusations that politicians who switch to the ruling party are being shielded by the commission.

​”Someone asked the question that it is alleged that politicians who jump ship to the ruling party are shielded. The simple answer is that it’s not true,” Tahir stated.

​”I think the reference was made to the case of a former governor of Delta State. To the best of my knowledge, that case is still undergoing investigation. And in due course, justice will be served,” he affirmed.

​He maintained that the EFCC operates independently and without political bias, emphasizing that no suspect enjoys immunity from investigation or prosecution simply due to political affiliation.

“There’s no attempt or intention anywhere to shield anybody on account of switching parties — certainly not under this chairman,” he stressed.

Okowa and his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in April 2025, months after the former governor was reportedly arrested by the EFCC in November 2024 over the alleged diversion of N1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds, as reported by this platform and Daily Trust, leading to public outcry and allegations of a cover-up.

​Tahir explained that the agency’s preference is to conduct a comprehensive investigation before filing charges, particularly in high-profile cases, to ensure a strong prosecution.

​”We have had situations where cases were rushed to court, and the outcomes were not always good,” he noted.

​”So we would like to do a thorough job. When we go to court, Nigerians will see what the case is all about.”

​Addressing criticisms regarding the lack of convictions of prominent figures, Tahir insisted that every case receives equal attention.

He acknowledged the complexity of investigating politically exposed persons: “For instance, a governor who spent eight years controlling a state and its resources — whatever allegations arise from his stewardship — it’s not something you rush to investigate within months or a year.”

​The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all corruption matters with equal dedication and thoroughness.
