Deputy Speaker Warns Against Scooping Fuel From Fallen Tanker After Fire Incident In Eku

The Deputy Speaker Delta State House of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Olorogun) Arthur Akpowowo Esq, has warned against scooping fuel from fallen tankers.

He said this in a statement on Thursday signed by Rex Omohwovo following a fuel tanker fire inferno that occurred at the early hours of Thursday, 20th November, 2025 along the Eku-Abraka express as a result of a fallen tanker conveying petroleum products.

His words: “I wish to use this medium to also advise our people to always steer clear whenever such an incident occurs. It was on record by several eye witnesses, that some person(s) were already scooping the petroleum products when the tanker burst into flames.”

He further stressed that, “Petrol (PMS) is highly inflammable and we should be very careful because it flames spreads with air and can kill multitudes within seconds.

He noted that no amount of fuel scooped can be equated to a life, saying people must be very reasonable in their decision making in such moments.

The said tanker fell between Felicia Emosoga and Esvee Omeke Streets in Eku community.

According to the statement, the lawmaker immediately swung into action following news of the incidence, reaching out to the Hon Commissioner Bureau for Special Duties, Hon Etacherure Ejiro Terry under whose directorate the Delta State Fire Service is operating, adding that the commissioner gave his assurance to follow up immediately.

Adding: “The good news is that no human casualty was recorded and no building was touched except a welding workshop.”

Meanwhile, the council chairman, Hon. Chief Augustine Ogedegbe JP, has also commended the Delta State Fire Service and the residents of Eku for their quick response.

In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, he said “their swift actions helped prevent the fire from spreading further and ensured that no lives were lost.”

Furthermore, he said: “It is important to remember that scooping fuel from fallen tankers is very dangerous and should be avoided, as it can lead to serious Fatalities.

“The Council remains committed to keeping everyone safe, and I encourage everyone to stay safe and follow proper safety measures during emergencies.”
