Army Confirms NYSC Corps Member Killed As Soldiers Engage Robbers In Abuja

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, during an armed robbery incident in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the Army, troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in the area.

On arriving at the scene, the soldiers reportedly came under gunfire from fleeing armed robbers, leading to what was described as a brief but intense exchange of fire.

During the gun battle, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and sustained fatal injuries.
Despite efforts by the troops to secure the area and preserve lives, the corps member sadly succumbed to his injuries, the Army said.

It noted that the situation was highly volatile as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents of the community from harm.
The Commander of the Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the National Youth Service Corps, and others affected by the tragic loss.

“This heartbreaking loss has cast a deep shadow over all personnel of the Guards Brigade,” the statement read.

The Army added that a full investigation had been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring the public of transparency and accountability.
It stated that the remains of the deceased had been handed over to the appropriate civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, the Army said it would continue reviewing its operational procedures to improve civilian safety while confronting criminal elements threatening public peace.

Residents were also urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies in maintaining security across the FCT.
