DELSU Lecturer, Prof. Emmanuel Akarah, Dies After Reported Cardiac Arrest

The Faculty of Education, Delta State University, has been thrown into mourning following the death of Professor Emmanuel Akarah of the Department of Human Kinetics, Recreation and Sports Science Education.

Prof. Akarah, popularly known among colleagues and students as “Don Spino,” reportedly passed away in the early hours of Friday at the university’s health centre after suffering a cardiac arrest.

According to a statement issued by Dr. S.R. Akpokiniovo on behalf of the Faculty Welfare Committee, the lecturer was rushed to the University Health Centre on Campus II by his wife and children after the medical emergency occurred at about 1 a.m.

The statement disclosed that doctors at the health facility, including the Director of the University Health Services, later confirmed him dead on arrival at about 1:25 a.m.

Dr. Akpokiniovo said he personally visited the health centre after receiving a distress call from a security officer informing him of the incident.

Describing the development as shocking and painful, he expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the academic.

The late Prof. Akarah was a member of the Department of Human Kinetics, Recreation and Sports Science Education in the Faculty of Education and was said to be widely respected by colleagues and students.

Tributes have continued to pour in from members of the university community following news of his death.
