NEC Approves 112 As National Emergency Number

The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved 112 as Nigeria’s unified national emergency number, in a move aimed at strengthening emergency response across the country.

The decision, taken at a recent NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is designed to streamline access to emergency services and eliminate the use of multiple distress lines currently in operation.

Under the new arrangement, Nigerians will be able to dial 112 for all emergencies, including security threats, fire outbreaks, road accidents, medical emergencies, and disaster situations, with response agencies expected to be promptly activated.

Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve coordination among emergency responders and ensure quicker intervention in life-threatening situations.

The council noted that the unified number will enhance efficiency, reduce response delays, and provide a simplified system for citizens in distress.

With the approval, 112 is expected to serve as the central contact point for emergency services nationwide once full implementation is concluded.
