NUJ Delta Commends Oborevwori On Merit-Based Permanent Secretary Appointments, Seeks Improved Retirement Welfare

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what it described as a transparent, merit-driven process in the recent appointment of Permanent Secretaries in the state civil service.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the NUJ Delta Council said the governor’s approach reflects “seniority, professionalism, merit, and proven track records,” which has strengthened public confidence in the system.

The council noted that the long-awaited exercise had been widely anticipated and expressed satisfaction that the governor responded to calls for its conduct while ensuring transparency and respect for due process.

According to NUJ Delta, the decision will help reduce “unhealthy rivalry, needless agitation, favouritism, and politicisation” associated with top-level civil service appointments, while also boosting morale among workers.

The union added that when clear and fair criteria are followed, officers are more likely to accept outcomes in good faith, trusting that every eligible candidate was given a fair opportunity.

It also aligned with the governor’s position that appointment as Permanent Secretary is not the peak of a civil servant’s career, noting that the attainment of Salary Grade Level 17 remains the statutory apex of the civil service structure.

However, NUJ Delta urged the state government to strengthen post-retirement welfare systems, warning that many retired senior officers face financial difficulties despite years of dedicated service.

The council expressed concern that inadequate retirement benefits could weaken morale within the service and contribute to unhealthy competition for top administrative positions.

It therefore called for improved remuneration and more sustainable retirement frameworks to ensure that public service remains “dignified, rewarding, and aspirational.”

NUJ Delta reaffirmed its support for the Oborevwori administration’s reforms aimed at promoting fairness, professionalism, and efficiency in governance.
