Ogun Bans Graduation Ceremonies For Nursery Pupils, Limits Events To Primary 6, JSS 3, SS 3

The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has issued a new directive restricting graduation ceremonies in schools across the state to only three academic levels: Primary Six, Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3), and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS 3).

The policy, contained in a circular dated June 18, 2026, was issued to both public and private schools through the Department of Private Schools, following concerns raised by stakeholders over rising financial pressure on parents and guardians.

According to the Ministry, graduation ceremonies for Nursery, Kindergarten, and other non-terminal classes are no longer permitted, as they are considered unnecessary and burdensome to families.

The circular further directed that graduation ceremonies for eligible classes must be conducted in a modest manner, without any form of financial obligation imposed on learners, parents, or guardians.

It also prohibited the use of canopies, Aso Ebi, customized clothing, and other elaborate social displays during school graduation events, stressing that such practices have turned academic celebrations into costly social occasions.

School proprietors, heads, and administrators were instructed to ensure strict compliance with the directive and to give it wide circulation within their institutions.

The Ministry warned that any school found violating the new guidelines would face appropriate sanctions in line with existing education regulations in the state.
