Tinubu To Address Joint Session Of National Assembly On Democracy Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a Joint Address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) charged with coordinating this year’s national celebrations.

Inaugurating the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the presidential address would be one of the major highlights of the Democracy Day programme approved by the Federal Government.

Akume described Democracy Day as an important national occasion for reflecting on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose legacy remains central to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to the SGF, the annual celebration also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

With preparations entering the final phase ahead of the anniversary, Akume urged members of the committee to commence work immediately, stressing that this year’s events would be conducted in line with the administration’s commitment to prudence and fiscal responsibility.

The approved programme for the 27th Democracy Day celebration includes a World Press Conference on June 4, Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5, a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7, a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9, and Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on June 10.

Other activities scheduled for June 12 include a Presidential Broadcast by President Tinubu and a Democracy Day Gala Night to round off the national commemoration.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest polls in Nigeria’s history.
