Ghanaian TikToker Jailed For Claiming President Mahama Sacrificed 32 Cows

A Ghanaian TikToker, Camilla Alhassan, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for spreading false information about President John Dramani Mahama.

Alhassan was convicted after pleading guilty to publishing false news and engaging in offensive conduct through a series of videos posted on TikTok. In the videos, she falsely claimed that President Mahama sacrificed or buried 32 cows in a ritual to secure victory in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

She also alleged, without evidence, that the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to flood victims was intended to conceal the alleged ritual.

The court ruled that the claims were entirely false and capable of misleading the public. Although Alhassan appealed for leniency, the judge imposed a one-year custodial sentence, stressing that the punishment was necessary to deter the spread of misinformation on social media.

One charge relating to electronic abuse was struck out due to jurisdictional issues, but she was convicted on the remaining offences.

The judgment has sparked discussions about Ghana’s efforts to combat fake news and hold individuals accountable for spreading false information on digital platforms.
