Facebook User Slams SDU Over Dissolution Of SUG, Alleges Threat To Student Democracy

A Facebook user, Oseh Joshua, has criticized the decision by the management of Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, to dissolve the institution’s 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG), describing the move as a violation of student union autonomy.

Reacting to the university’s directive, Joshua argued that writing the final examination does not automatically amount to graduation, insisting that elected student leaders remain bona fide students until their academic results are officially approved by the university Senate.

He further condemned the directive requiring outgoing union officials to hand over all union records, financial documents and other assets to the Dean of Students’ Affairs, saying the move places the Students’ Union under administrative control rather than allowing it to function independently.

According to him, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, whose role should be advisory, ought to have protected the democratic process instead of facilitating what he described as an administrative takeover of the union.

Joshua maintained that there was no justification for dissolving the union or appointing any form of caretaker arrangement. He argued that the incumbent executives should remain in office during the inter-session break and conduct elections when the university resumes for the first semester.

“Student democracy cannot be arbitrarily paused simply because executives wrote their last paper, and management must respect the Union’s right to complete its transition democratically,” he stated.

The reaction followed a memo issued by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, dated August 3, 2026, notifying students of the expiration of the tenure of the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government.

The memo, issued pursuant to Section 36, Paragraph 2 of the Students’ Information Handbook 2025 (as amended), stated that the tenure of the Students’ Union Government would terminate upon the conclusion of the university’s second semester examinations.

According to the notice, the Executive Council, Parliament and Judicial Council of the Students’ Union stand dissolved with effect from 11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The outgoing officers were directed to cease all official functions and hand over all union properties, documents, financial records, bank details and other assets to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by noon on Monday, August 10, 2026, alongside a comprehensive handover note signed by the President, Secretary-General and Financial Secretary.

The university also warned that any action taken in the name of the Students’ Union Government after the dissolution date would be considered null and void.
