VCRU Assault Case: CDHR Hails Release Of Gani Progress, Lauds Delta CP

UGHELLI, DELTA STATE — The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State Branch, has commended the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, and the state police command following the unconditional release of Master Gani Progress in connection with the October 1, 2026, assault case involving operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in Ughelli.

Gani Progress was released to his grandfather after proper profiling by the police established that he was not linked to the Ughelli VCRU assault case.

The development followed the intervention of CDHR Delta, which had appealed to the Commissioner of Police for thorough profiling of suspects in the case to ensure that innocent persons were not wrongly implicated.

In a statement on the development, Comr. Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, who disclosed the release, commended CP Erale and the Delta State Police Command for what he described as professionalism in handling the matter.

“Master Gani Progress has been released unconditionally to his grandfather after proper profiling. He was not linked to the Ughelli VCRU assault case,” Agberen said.

He commended the police authorities for ensuring that Gani Progress was not punished for an offence with which he had no connection.

“We commend the CP and Delta State Command for ensuring that innocent people are not punished for crimes they know nothing about,” he said.

Agberen described the development as a demonstration of justice and due process, adding that the handling of the matter represented the kind of policing that protects innocent citizens while allowing the authorities to pursue genuine investigations.

“This is justice. This is policing we want to see,” he said.
