NUJ Delta Committed To Capacity Building For Journalists — Oyowe

ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous capacity building for journalists to enhance professionalism, ethical standards and the quality of journalism in the state.

Chairman of the council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, stated this on Monday, August 24, 2026, in his welcome address at an ongoing one-day workshop on Oil and Gas Reporting at the NUJ Press Centre, Maryam Babangida Way, Asaba.

The workshop, organised by the NUJ Delta State Council in partnership with Chevron Nigeria Limited, is themed “Enhancing Professional Skills and Ethical Standards in Oil and Gas Journalism.”

Oyowe said the workshop was coming at a time when the oil and gas industry remained central to Nigeria’s economy, energy security and national development.

He stressed that journalists’ responsibility went beyond reporting events, as they were expected to provide the public with accurate, balanced, credible and well-contextualised information.

According to him, the responsibility was even more critical when reporting the oil and gas industry because of its technical, sensitive and economically significant nature.

“Oil and gas journalism requires more than the ability to write a good story,” Oyowe said, noting that journalists must understand the industry’s value chain, regulatory framework, environmental concerns, community relations, energy transition and the complex economic issues surrounding the sector.

He also emphasised the need for journalists to uphold professional ethics, accuracy and fairness in their reports.

The NUJ chairman said the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to strengthen their knowledge and sharpen their professional skills, expressing confidence that the lectures, interactive sessions and practical discussions would equip journalists with better tools for asking the right questions, interpreting technical information and producing reports that were both informative and responsible.

He urged participants to take full advantage of the workshop by asking questions, sharing experiences and engaging with the facilitators.

Oyowe said the knowledge acquired should ultimately translate into better journalism and more informed public discourse on Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

He commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for its commitment to supporting professional development and constructive engagement with the media.

He also appreciated NNPC Limited, the resource persons and facilitators for their contributions towards making the programme possible.

Reiterating the commitment of the NUJ Delta State Council to continuous capacity building, Oyowe said a better-trained journalist was better positioned to serve the public interest and uphold the credibility of the journalism profession.

He expressed appreciation to Chevron Nigeria Limited, NNPC Limited, facilitators, guests and participating journalists, and wished participants a fruitful, engaging and rewarding workshop.
