NUJ Reintegrates SWAN, Backs Zamfara Security Summit, Suspends Five Members

DUTSE, JIGAWA STATE — The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has approved the reabsorption and reintegration of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) into the union’s national structure.

The decision was among several key resolutions reached at the NEC meeting held in Dutse, Jigawa State, on Tuesday.

The meeting, chaired by the National President of the union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, was attended by national officers, as well as chairmen and secretaries of state councils.

The meeting deliberated on issues affecting journalism practice, journalists’ welfare and safety, national security, professional development, institutional strengthening, agriculture, strategic partnerships, and the growth of the union.

According to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NEC approved the reintegration of SWAN following extensive deliberations and after considering a letter earlier submitted by the National Chairman of SWAN, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, who was also invited to address members of the council.

The union said the decision to reintegrate SWAN was taken in the interest of unity, professional solidarity, inclusiveness, and the continued development of journalism and sports journalism in Nigeria. NEC also recognised the current leadership of SWAN under Comrade Isaiah Benjamin and approved its reintegration into the NUJ structure in line with the relevant provisions of the union.

Addressing the country’s security challenges, NEC commended the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies for their continued partnership and support in promoting the safety and security of journalists.

The council also called on journalists and media organisations to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and responsibility in reporting terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and other forms of insecurity.

It cautioned journalists against sensationalism and the glorification of terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements, warning that such reports could amplify propaganda, facilitate recruitment, and enhance the public profile of criminal groups.

In view of the prevailing security challenges confronting the northern region, NEC endorsed the proposed Northern States Security Summit to be hosted by Zamfara State, describing it as an important platform for developing practical and sustainable strategies for addressing insecurity and enhancing the protection of journalists and media organisations.

The council also highlighted several strategic partnerships and interventions.

The council also commended the Bauchi State Government for approving and releasing over ₦400 million for the comprehensive renovation of the NUJ Secretariat in the state, describing the gesture as a significant demonstration of support for journalism and the welfare of journalists.

The council equally praised the Jigawa State Government for its commitment to promoting mechanised agriculture as a means of boosting food production, creating employment opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of citizens. It called on other state governments to emulate the initiative.

NEC also expressed appreciation to UN Women for its continued support for the union, particularly in the area of capacity building for women journalists, including a recent training programme organised in Abuja.

As part of efforts to strengthen the union, NEC approved a partnership with a reputable law firm to provide legal representation, advisory services, and other forms of legal support to the union and its members, particularly in states where litigation involving the NUJ arises.

The council also expressed support for an initiative by Abuja-based lawyer, Olubunmi, who is participating in a Guinness World Records campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting advocacy against gender-based violence.

In addition, NEC announced plans to organise two major national events before the end of 2026 to promote professional development, institutional unity, networking, and members’ welfare.

NEC also approved the suspension of five members for anti-union activities. Those suspended are Ubon Ekanem and Edem Archibong from the Cross River State Council, as well as Dare Akogun, Mosunmola Ayobami, and Usman Adamu Sabi from the Kwara State Council.

NEC reiterated the importance of adherence to the union’s constitution and urged members to utilise established internal mechanisms for resolving disputes while upholding the unity, integrity, and institutional stability of the organisation.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger, more united, and professionally responsive Nigeria Union of Journalists capable of protecting the interests of journalists, promoting ethical journalism, and contributing meaningfully to national development.

The body also expressed appreciation to the Jigawa State Government and the leadership of the NUJ Jigawa State Council for their support and hospitality in hosting the meeting.

Members of the drafting committee were Comrade Gambo Santos Sanga, Secretary of the Kaduna State Council; Comrade Mary Domtur, Secretary of the Plateau State Council; Comrade Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the Ogun State Council; Comrade Temidayo Adu, Secretary of the Oyo State Council; and Comrade Shaibu Umar, Secretary of the Gombe State Council.
