Uvwie: 40-Year-Old Man Commits Suicide Over Inability To Repay N1.8M Loan

A 40-year-old man identified as Ogbeni Goggo has reportedly committed suicide in the Ebrumede/DSC Roundabout area of Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, after allegedly battling financial difficulties following the failure of a business for which he reportedly obtained a ₦1.8 million loan.

According to a report by human rights activist and social commentator, Comrade Israel Joe, the deceased took the loan to finance a business, but the venture allegedly failed to yield the expected results, leaving him under financial pressure.

Goggo had reportedly been married for about three years and had no child at the time of his death.

The tragedy reportedly unfolded after he failed to return home on Wednesday, raising concerns from his wife, who found his absence unusual.

According to the report, Goggo had around midnight sent messages to some friends and family members expressing despair, telling them that he was tired of life and wanted to end it all.

Those who received the messages reportedly tried calling his phone repeatedly, but he did not answer.

His wife and family members subsequently began searching for him and continued their efforts throughout Thursday, but could not locate him.

On Friday morning, his wife reportedly went to the Ebrumede Police Station to report him missing.

According to Joe’s account, police officers at the station subsequently showed her a photograph of a deceased man recovered around the Ebrumede Flyover/DSC Roundabout area.

She reportedly identified the deceased as her husband.

Joe said some people who witnessed the incident had raised an alarm and attempted to assist Goggo before the arrival of the police.

The remains were subsequently evacuated by the police to a mortuary in Agbarho.

The incident has raised concerns over the impact of financial hardship, debt and emotional distress on individuals and families, particularly amid the country’s economic challenges.

Reacting to the tragedy, Joe expressed sadness over the death and urged people facing overwhelming financial or emotional difficulties not to suffer in silence.

He appealed to individuals experiencing severe distress to seek help from trusted family members, friends, religious leaders or qualified professionals rather than resorting to self-harm.

The circumstances surrounding the death could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report, while the Delta State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
