The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on publishers in Delta State to avoid publishing stories that blackmail people, adding that they must reject all forms of enticement that props them to carry fake news.
Oborevwori who spoke in his office in Asaba when publishers in the State under the aegis of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN), Delta State Council paid him a courtesy visit recently, commended them for effectively covering the activities of the various organs of government in the state.
He also urged them to put machinery in place that properly investigates stories before they go to press.
He added: “We respect publishers involved with the print media unlike those online, because you can be reached. Those online can do wrong and escape because many of them are anonymous.”
Continuing, he opined that since he assumed office as Speaker five months ago, the House has passed several bills, saying that eight of these have been assented to.
“Some are still at the committee stage, while others have been fixed for public hearing,” he said.
“We serve as the check and balance for the Executive, as we will work hand in hand with them to move the state to the next level, ” he averred.
Furthermore, Oborevwori assured ACNPN that under him, lawmakers in the state will do the right things.
Earlier on, during his address, the Chairman, ACNPN, Comr. Jude Obiemienyego, opined that the visit was geared towards interfacing with the office of the Speaker on his activities to enable a robust working relationship with indigenous publishers.
Jude continued: “Good information machinery is indeed a veritable tool and an indispensable driving force for every people-oriented government.”
