Gives University Management 7-Days Ultimatum To Address Demands Or Face Total Strike Action

Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the management to meet its welfare demands or face total strike action, saying that “the Peretomode-led administration has done next to nothing in addressing their demands.”

The Joint Action Committee is made up of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSAANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NATT) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

During a congress that held earlier today in Abraka at Site 1 of the institution, the JAC rejected the proposal of the management to settle some of their demands, saying that after the ultimatum expires, they will meet to determine the magnitude of the strike action to adopt if the university authorities fail to address their demands.

The unions wondered why the management has continually flouted the government’s directive to see staff welfare as a priority, adding that “the management chose to apply the resources available on other preferred expenditure heads.”

The union in a statement issued, a copy, which was made available to newsmen reads: “We have unanimously decided to issue a 7-day ultimatum to management with effect from Wednesday 4th September, 2019 to implement all the promotions and pay all the arrears, failing which members of SSANU, NAAT, and NASU shall embark on a total strike action.”

Speaking to journalists, the Chairman, SSANU, Comr. Monday Izu, gave their demands from the management within the next 7 days as payment of the promotion arrears of 2016, implementation of the 2017 and 2018 promotion and payment of the accrued arrears and the payment of the 2017 and 2018 incremental steps arrears.

But the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Victor Peretemode, when contacted did not respond to text messages sent to his phone number.
