Police Brutality: FG To Set Up Judicial Panel Of Inquiry In Six Months

The National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has directed the immediate establishment of Judicial Panels of Inquiry to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra judicial killings.

This will be done within the space of six months.

It was also revealed in a tweet by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the Vice President, thar the said Judicial Panel of Inquiry will investigate police brutality in all states and the Federal Capital Territory, adding that special funds will also be made available to compensate victims of brutality.

Laolu added that decisions reached at the meeting also said that the state governors are to henceforth take charge of police tactical units.

Continuing, the Vice President’s aide in his tweets disclosed that states and the FCT are to form a Security & Human Rights Committee.

These decisions follows calls by some Nigerians for police reforms who took to the streets protesting police brutality.

This action led to the scrap of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the formation of the Special Weapons and Tactical Team (SWAT) by the Nigerian police.
