Breaking: Lagos Judicial Panel Awards Compensation To Victims Of Police Brutality

Lagos State judicial panel hearing cases of police brutality on Friday, awarded compensation to some victims of police brutality the panel has heard their cases and found meritorious.

Some petitioners who received compensation of N10 million are Adebayo Abayomi for the extra judicial kiling of his mother, and Hannah Olugbodi for the being shot by a police officer among others.

Justice Doris Okuwobi (retrd) in her reccomendation also noted that erring officers who have committed these abuses are sanctioned.

The compensation is obviously one of the progress recorded by the panel even though many believe the panel didn’t do much.

Recall that a week ago, when Rinu Oduala, one of the youth representatives pulled out of the panel, she accused the state government of insincerely. However, who also said that some progress were recorded by the panel, one of which is giving victims of police brutaility an opportunity to speak about their ordeal.

In her words,
“For the first time, SARS victims have had the opportunity to be truly seen & heard by the govt, by the public, & by the system that let them to be victims in the first place. The panel allowed victims of police intimidation & brutality to have their day in the light of justice.

“They got to expose the violence that was meted out, to experience some catharsis from having the government acknowledge its failures and, in many cases, are going to be receiving some compensation, however inadequate for the disruption to their lives.”
