Nigerian Library Association (NLA), the umbrella body for all practicing librarians, library educators and other information practitioners in Nigeria, has condemned with utmost dismay the purported move by the Abia State Government to convert the Abia Zonal Library to a motor park.
In a press statement signed by Dr. Ogochukwu T. Emiri, National Public Relations Officer,NLA said “this is clearly unacceptable especially in this knowledge age where the library is central in driving the new economy (knowledge economy).”

Adding: “Government at all levels in Nigeria must see development of libraries as a must in this 21st century. This will go a long way in building literacy levels which will in turn help reduce all social vices such as militancy, kidnapping, raping, cultism, drug abuse etc.”
The statement continued: “We therefore, in strong terms condemn this abnormality and advice the government of Abia State to reconsider their position on this matter.
“We use this medium to assure all our members that the NLA will pursue this matter to it’s logical conclusion.”
