The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the eNaira wallet has recorded over 488,000 downloads from over 160 countries.

The apex bank disclosed this in a statement on Friday, November 12, 2021.

The CBN described the appetite for the eNaira as excellent; going by the numbers being recorded.

The statement said: “So far, we have onboarded over 488,000 consumer wallets and about 78,000 merchant wallets; with these downloads occurring in over 160 countries (per Google Playstore and Apple Store data).

“We have also recorded almost 17,000 transactions amounting to over N62m with the average transaction being about $9.3 each.

“These numbers suggest the adoption rate has been excellent.”

Meanwhile, the apex bank has urged all Nigerians to embrace the eNaira, adding that it is more reliable than cryptocurrencies.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 3, by the CBN spokesman, Nnamdi Okwuosa at the CBN Fair, with the theme, ‘Promoting financial stability and economic development.’

The fair was to create an opportunity for stakeholders and the general public in Abia and Ebonyi States to understand issues on the eNaira, consumer protection, currency operations, payment system management, and development finance initiatives.

Nnamdi added that eNaira is a legal tender issued by a sovereign nation; and also regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria; saying, “Digital currency (eNaira) is more reliable than cryptocurrency which is not regulated.”
