School Fees: We Are In Dialogue With Mgt. For Review, Reduction –DELSU SUG

The Student leadership of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has said that they are in talks with the management of the institution to see that the increased school fees for freshers is reviewed and reduced.

In an online chat with Oasis Magazine, the Student Union Government (SUG) President, Amb. Cyprian Odifili, said that “for the sake of emphasis and clarity, there is no school fees increment for stale (old) students in Delta State University, Abraka, as being speculated and carried on rumour.”

According to him, “the only issue is the school fees schedule of freshers (100l) students.”

He disclosed that the Union and the school management met on the 14th of February, 2022 to dialogue and later adjourned.

Adding: “We shall continue to engage the management, negotiate better deals until a more favourable decision is reached in the interest of our fresh students.”

He noted that for the 100 Level students, “the professional courses that were below N200, 000 are currently above N200, 000,” while “the none professional courses that were below N100, 000 are now above N100, 000.”

Asked if reports that the management increased hostel accommodation fees is true, he said: “Ignore hostel issues. That was done during the last administration, not ours. Although about N10, 000 was added to the hostel fees after massive rehabilitation was done to ensure that students were able to live there because before now most of these hostels were not habitable and were deserted.”

Following the adjustment in school fees for fresh students admitted into the university, a joint meeting was held between the Delta state university management and the Students Union Government concerning the adjustment on 14th February, 2022. At the end of the meeting, the following resolution were reached.

I. The adjustment in fee did not affect the stale students.

II. In order to cushion the effect of the adjustment, the management agreed to increase the number of students engaged in the work-study scheme by the university.

III. The work study scheme is to be extended to Oleh campus of the university.

IV. Over 50% students to be engaged in the work-study scheme program shall be reserved for fresh students

V. Management shall continued to sustain instalmental payments of fees by all students.

VI. Management agreed that the variations in some components of school fee breakdown in different faculties shall be reconciled.

VII. Management shall continue to engage students Union Government in a bid to resolve all issues associated with adjustment in fees.

VIII. That all students should remain calm, show understanding and allow dialogue to prevail on the matter.
