Community Appeals To Delta State Government To Reopen Ogume Grammar School

The people of Ogume Community have appealed to Delta State Government to reopen Ogume Grammar School, Ogume in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state to enable teachers and students commence teaching and learning activities.

The chairman of Ogume Community Development Committee (CDC) , Mr. David Agadi made the appeal on behalf of the community when he led other stakeholders of the community on a courtesy visit to the commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu in Asaba.

Mr. Agadi , who applauded the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for driving the education system in the state effectively, said that the essence of the visit was to inform the Commissioner the readiness and efforts of the community towards the reopening of the school.

He said that the community had compensated the principal of the school, Mrs. Ighomuaye Anene Rita whose car was burnt during the unfortunate incident, adding that the community had carried out the renovation of the burnt classroom blocks.

Also speaking, Dr Valentine Akpati , who thanked the principal of the school for her show of love, cooperation and sacrifices to the community since the incident , said they were pleased with the approach with which the ministry handled the issue.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu advised the leaders of the community to interface with parents in order for them to prevail on their children to embrace attitudinal change and shun negative vices , explaining that when the Ministry was satisfied with what had been achieved by the Community the state government on the need to reopen the school.

Mrs. Ezewu, who said that the decision by the state government to close the school was not intended to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure stability in the school, noted that though it was painful decision to take by the state considering the effect on the educational pursuit of the students.

In his contribution, the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro noted that if government had not taken the decision to shut the school temporary some people in the community would have taken Laws into their hands.

He said that the ministry would visit the community to ascertain the level of work done in the reahabilitation of the burnt school.

Mr. Oghoro described the synergy between the principal of the school and the leaders of the community in ensuring the reopening of the school as a step in the right direction.

The Director of Schools in the Ministry, Mrs. Clementina Ojumah harped on the need for parents to ensure proper upbringing of their children and wards , adding that the community leaders should intensify efforts to talk to parents on why they needed to play more role on their children to avoid unnecessary behaviour.

The high point was presentation of a copy of a book titled: 40 Years of Ogume Grammar School (1975-2015): A Legacy of Academic Excellence to the Commissioner by Alaska Ekele an eminent Old Student of the school. The book projected the school on good light and have list of ex students of the school that are doing well in their chosen fields.
