International Women’s Day: BEDC Celebrates Female Staff

Celebrating the International Women’s Day , experts have decried the under representation of women in leadership positions in Nigeria.

Speaking at the commemoration of International Women’s Day celebration organized by the BEDC Electricity Plc. Prof. Mrs. Idia Ize-Iyamu said the under representation of women in leadership positions in Nigeria and Africa at large could be attributed to lack of women’s preparation ahead of opportunities.

Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu stressed that the only way Women would change the narratives is to keep learning new things, embrace opportunities which would eventually prepare them to occupy leadership positions in the society.

According to her, women should multi-task to enable them balance both their family responsibilities and their careers.

“Being a Woman is about doing things that give you Joy and fulfillment, as a woman, you must balance the family responsibility and your career, you must definitely be a strong woman”.

“Embrace learning new things and choose to be multitasking as you embrace equity, diversity and combat gender inequality.”

She further stressed that Women must learn to support their fellow Women occupying leadership position or intending to occupy any leadership position as records have shown how women have aided or pulled down their fellow women.

Also motivating the female staff of BEDC , the Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electricity PLC , Mrs Folake Soetan called on Women to learn how to prioritize their responsibility at every stage of their lives.

Citing her personal experience, she noted that she was able to balance her career with family responsibility to the extent that none suffered .

“As a Woman CEO working in a Male dominated environment, I have to build my team work spirit, things I don’t know, I ask questions and as time goes on , we learn from each other.

“There was a stage in my Life, my Marriage was the top most priority, I gave it my best to ensure it worked, some other time, my Children were the most important thing to me and I ensured that they were given the adequate attention, when is also time to give my career the best shot, I definitely did and today , the story keeps getting better and better”.

She however advised young women to be more enterprising and prepare themselves to occupy leadership positions.

The high point of the occasion was the presentation of BEDC International Women’s Day Celebration Appreciation Award to Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, UBTH Orthodontist Department and Mrs Folake Soetan , CEO, Ikeja Electricity PLC in recognition of their contribution to the Gender Equality Movement.

The occasion was graced by Senior and Junior female staff of BEDC Electricity Plc (BEDC) as all appreciated the management for organizing the occasion for the first time in the history of the Company.
