Ayemidejor To Sapele NUJ: Journalism Is A Noble Profession, Rid Out Quacks

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State, Hon. Austine Ayemidejljor, has called on the leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Sapele Correspondent’s Chapel to pursue professionalism and fight against quacks denting the image of the body.

Ayemidejor said this when the new leadership of the union paid him a courtesy visit on Sunday at his residence in Sapele.

While congratulating the new executive members of Sapele NUJ for emerging winners during the elections, he said that just the way quacks are not allowed to be doctors and lawyers like in many professions, a noble body like NUJ must stop quacks from carrying out the duties of journalists in the area.

He added: “Journalism occupies a key position in the society,” urging the union to ensure that its members cross-check their facts before sending stories for publications in their online and print platforms.

Continuing, he tasked the excos to ensure that those that flout the rules guiding the profession are fished out and alienated.

Furthermore, he called on Sapele NUJ to support the incoming administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

“For the first time in 60 years, an Okpe man has become Governor. During campaigns I told them that if Okpe misses it now, it will take another 48 years to get it. By then, I would have become 110 years old,” he said.

The politician who is also one of the patrons of the body, said in Sapele, there is only one political party that is vibrant, just as he assured Deltans that Oborevwori will perform well so that after his eight-year term, another PDP candidate will be voted again.as Governor.

“We will give good governance and change the narrative” he opined.

Earlier, Comrade Agbajor in his address, said the courtesy call was a thank-you-visit for his many assistance to the union and to as well inform him that a new leadership has been sworn-in, saying that his support is needed for the new administration to succeed.

According to him, the union has passed through ups and downs, adding that Hon. Ayemidejor has always remained committed to the growth of Sapele NUJ.

In his words: “We need your fatherly advice, prayers and in other possible ways in order for us to be able to tackle issues from time to time.”

He continued: “This is the first time an indigene of Okpe (both paternally and maternally) is occupying the position of Chairman in the union,” noting that the Secretary, Daniel Umukoro is also from Okpe.

Elections were conducted on the 23rd of March to elect new leaders to pilot the affairs of Sapele NUJ for the next three years.

Also present during the courtesy call were Daniel Umukoro, Secretary; Rita Daniels, Assistant Secretary, Esada Uyono, Treasurer; Clarkson Ogo, Financial Secretary and Dorothy Egwe, Auditor.
