Sapele NUJ Chapel Visits New Police Area Commander, Pledges Support

Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Sapele Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Nelson Agbajor, has assured the new Sapele Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force,
ACP Idris Abdullahi Munta of the Union’s support for him, saying such cooperation is a vital necessity to achieve security of lives and property.

Agbajor, who spoke during the visit of the Union to the Area Commander, said the visit was mainly to officially introduce the newly elected executive to the Area Commander and seek ways to tighten the bond between NUJ and the police in the area in order for residents to go about their daily activities without fear.

According to him, Sapele Correspondent Chapel of the NUJ has always partnered with the command, just as he recalled how the pioneer Area Commander, ACP Mamman Sale Rijau of Blessed Memory was one of the union’s grand patrons before he passed on.

In his words, “the relationship between the media and the security agency can never be overemphasized,” adding: “This is because, the media has a vital role to play as far as all positive security activities reportage is concerned and with this, the Sapele correspondent Chapel made up of various Journalists from the print, broadcast and vibrant online media have been doing its best in ensuring that we give positive media reportage to the command and call to order if need be right from time immemorial and this we intend to maintain.”

He continued: “Members of Sapele Chapel are intellectually sound journalists from TV and radio stations, online blogs, newspapers and magazines which means that the area of coverage is well covered especially activities of the police in Sapele Area Command.”

He reminded the Command that Sapele correspondents’ Chapel covers five Local Government Areas in Delta State, which he said are Sapele, Okpe, Ethiope West, Ethiope East and Warri North.

“We also hope that the relationship we maintained with the past Area commanders will continue with you,” he said.

Meanwhile, he hinted that the union will soon organize a Press Week and the support of the police is of utmost importance

Responding, ACP Munta said since he took over one month ago, he has achieved so much, while stating that he relies heavily on the media to continue to do more.

“We welcome you all and thank you all that you came to this place not for a mere introduction but for us to get to know each other better. So, I am very happy with this and at the same time, I am urging you that the cooperation you had with my predecessors continue with me. I assure you that you will see more cooperation from me and you may even end up saying that the present Area Commander gave us more cooperation than the previous ones.

“So, feel free. If you see anything with our policemen or with me; feel free to call and make enquiries. We are ever ready to provide answers,” he said.

Senior police officers also present during the visit were SP Samuel Onwualu, Area Crime Officer, SP Sambo Aaron, Area Traffic Officer, ASP Mary Ajueyitsi, OC Juvenile/Welfare Center and ASP Lawal Faruk, Station Officer.
