Tinubu: My Emergence As ECOWAS Chair Affirms Nigeria’s Continued Leadership In The Sub-region, African Continent

President Bola Tinubu has said that his emergence as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States “is a noteworthy affirmation of Nigeria’s continued leadership in the sub-region and the African continent.”

In a statement following his emergence, he added: “As Chairman of the important coalition, I renew my dedication and that of our nation to the cause of peace and progress as we foster the collaboration and commitment required to tackle trans-border issues of security, economic growth and sustainable development.”

“I’m grateful to my distinguished colleagues for the honour of being elected as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the 63rd Ordinary Session that took place today in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau,” he said.

Tinubu was elected chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau.

The ECOWAS Chairmanship is a position held by one of the heads of state or government of the member countries, chosen on a rotating basis for a one-year tenure.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari occupied the position between 2018 and 2019.
