IGP To Establish Special Intervention Squad For Police Quick Response To Security Threats

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, unveiled the blueprint of his plan to establish a 40,000 strong special intervention squad(SIS), for police quick response to security threats nationwide.

The squad, according to him, would comprise selected highly trained elite officers from the mobile police force and tactical units.

He explained that 1,000 of the special forces would be posted to each of the 36 states, while the remaining 4,000 would be on standby to intervene in troubled spots.

The police chief, further explained that personnel of the proposed squad, would not perform routine duties, but housed and kept combat ready, engaged in daily training, in readiness for intercepting and neutralising high profile criminals.

The squad will be deployed in each command to deal with the state’s salient security challenges.

Concrete steps have already been taken to facilitate the smooth take-off of the SIS in 10 pilot states, already identified based on the recent violent crime assessment carried out in all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, while the other 27 states will immediately follow.
