We’re Drawing Up A Programme To Ensure Students In Tertiary Institutions Graduate With A Skill –Prof. Tonukari
By Daniel Dafe
Commissioner for Higher Education in Delta State, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari has said that plans are underway to ensure that students in tertiary institutions graduate with not just a certificate but also a skill to backup the certificate.
Professor Tonukari said this while responding to questions from Oasis Magazine on Satuday during an event in Abraka.
According to him, although professions like doctors, lawyers and a few have embraced this concept, it is not so in many other programmes in tertiary institutions in the state.
His words: “No matter what you study, we want you to come out with a specific skill. It’s going to take time, but we are drawing up a programme for that.”

Meanwhile, he said the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration is considering creating.a platform for Deltans who are above 50 years to get educated if they desire so.
Adding: “People think education is for just young kids trying to get into school. But, there are so many persons who are more than 50 years old who were not privileged to get education.”
He noted that in other countries like US and many European countries, old people still go back to school, saying Delta is ready to do same too.
He continued: “These people are ready to pay money to get the education but they are not willing to stay in the same class with the teenagers. They want their education not because they want a job anymore but because they want to be educated. So we are still going to look into a model where people can have life long education. Its not anywhere in Nigeria but with the level of Delta State, we can introduce it. It is going to be beneficial for the higher institution because we are going to make a good IGR from it and the people are going to benefit from it by having degrees and certificates.”
