By Daniel Dafe

Chairman, Ukoko r’ Emoto, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Comrade Matthew Ovedje Eyuren has praised the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, for his contributions to the growth of DELSU for the past four years he has been on the saddle.

Eyuren who spoke to Oasis Magazine at the weekend during the group’s End of Year Party in honour of the Commissioner for Higher Education in the state, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, added that “Prof. Egwunyenga is one of the best VC that the institution has ever had,” saying “he is God-sent.

His words: “If you had listened to my speech, the VC has been a very unique figure whether you like it or not. This VC has performed better than those of them who are our own. Why? Because he has been in the system for long. He has suffered victimisation, discrimination and isolation and he came from that background and has to a great extent right the wrongs.”

He continued: “In the area of staff promotion and welfare, he has been very optimal. Even at gunpoint, I can tell you that Professor Andy Egwunyenga is the best Vice Chancellor that DELSU has ever had since the beginning irrespective of tribe and clan. Now, staff are motivated, free, no victimisation etc. Egwunyenga is God-sent. We are languishing that he is going by November next year. If it was possible to give him another extra four (4) years, I would have canvased seriously for it.”

Furthermore, he said: “Egwunyenga is detribalised and I can say it one million times. From the promotion, staff welfare and when you look at the atmosphere, everybody is happy working for him and that is what we want.”

Meanwhile, he said the next VC that will take over from Egwunyenga must be an Urhobo man.

Adding: “Because, this is the time of Delta Central. It must be rotational.Prof V F Peretomode was from Delta South, Professor Andy Egwunyenga from Delta North and the next must be from Delta Central and we have agreed that the person that is coming by the grace of God must listen to the aspirations and yearnings of the Urhobos.”

Speaking further, Comrade Eyuren emphasised that DELSU Abraka, being the Premier University in the state, should have all faculties situated in the institution.

He applauded the former Governor for establishing universities in the other geopolitical zones.

He however appealed to His Excellency, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, the Executive Governor of Delta State to consider adding faculties of Law and Engineering to DELSU, Abraka to make it a full fledged University in Delta Central Senatorial District.
