Oborevwori Eulogises Former DELSU VC, Peretomode On Retirement

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, has eulogised a former Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Professor Victor F. Peretomode, describing his years of service as an enduring contribution to the development of education in the state and Nigeria.

Oborevwori gave the commendation on Thursday at the valedictory lecture and launch of two books by Peretomode at the 750 Lecture Theatre, Site 3, DELSU, Abraka, where the former Vice-Chancellor was honoured on his retirement from active university service.

The Governor, who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, said the valedictory ceremony provided an opportunity to celebrate a life of service, scholarship and leadership, as well as recognise the impact of the retired professor on the university.

He described Peretomode as a distinguished academic who, as Vice-Chancellor of DELSU, steered the institution through important years of growth and consolidation.

According to him, Peretomode’s tenure witnessed infrastructural expansion, academic reforms, the strengthening of institutional culture and sustained efforts to address cultism and other vices on campus.

The Governor said the achievements formed important aspects of Peretomode’s legacy, noting that his retirement marked the end of an important chapter of active service, but not the end of his contributions to scholarship and society.

Oborevwori also charged DELSU to live up to its responsibilities as Delta State’s premier university, in line with the theme of the valedictory lecture, “DELSU and the Burden of Expectation: The Challenge of Being Delta State’s Premier University.”

He said the university must continue to maintain high academic standards, promote research and innovation, produce competent graduates and contribute meaningfully to the development of Delta State and Nigeria.

The Governor noted that while the expectations placed on the institution constituted a burden, they also represented a privilege and a challenge to continually improve, embrace innovation and remain responsive to the changing needs of society.

Oborevwori described the launch of Peretomode’s two books alongside his valedictory lecture as a fitting reflection of his life as an academic, saying the publications represented his scholarship, experience and reflections and would contribute to continuing discourse on higher education and governance.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment, under the M.O.R.E. Agenda, to supporting tertiary institutions, improving staff welfare, expanding infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for teaching, research and innovation.

The Governor said investment in education remained an investment in the future of Delta State, adding that his administration would continue to support initiatives that strengthen the state’s tertiary education system.

Oborevwori congratulated Peretomode on his retirement and intellectual milestone, appreciating his years of service to DELSU and the wider university system.

He wished the retired professor good health, fulfilment and many more years of fruitful service to humanity, expressing the hope that his experience and scholarship would continue to inspire younger generations and contribute to the advancement of educational institutions.

The Governor also commended DELSU for honouring one of its distinguished former Vice-Chancellors, saying the state government and people were pleased to associate with the occasion and celebrate Peretomode’s legacy.
