PDP: We Do Not Support Itsekiri Consensus WSLC Candidate – Warri Urhobos
By Ambrose Ologide
The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) Warri Urhobos have stated that they were not part of consensus for an Itsekiri candidate for the chairmanship seat of Warri South Local Government Area.
This was contained in a statement issued by Professor (Chief) Israel N Abido (JP) and Chief Hon Chief Matthew Poko Opuoru, National Chairman and Deputy National Chairman of PDP Warri Urhobos respectively shortly after an enlarged meeting of the group in Warri on Saturday 18th May, 2024.
The group which was reacting to rumours making the rounds that the Commissioner for Youth Development, Delta State Weyimi Agbatenero was chosen as a concensus PDP chairmanship candidate for Warri South Local Government Council by the power that be, noted that it would be oppressive to impose a candidate on the PDP Warri Urhobos.
The statement maintained that it would be unacceptable for an Itsekiri to be chosen as the party’s chairmanship candidate without due consultation of party leaders and stakeholders.
The statement also pointed out that the chairmanship and other positions were rotated among the indigenous people in the other two Warri local government areas unlike in Warri South Local Government Council where its alleged that the said positions were monopolized by the Itsekiris inspite of the fact that the Urhobos of Warri were more in population and size in Warri South Local Government Area.
The PDP Warri Urhobos therefore stated that they will oppose any attempt by the power that be to impose the said candidate on them and that they are not negotiating the chairmanship position of Warri South Local Government Council with any group.
