Chukwuma Okafor, PhD(c), a politician and an entrepreneur has dropped his own advice on marriage.

He discouraged young men who have not reached certain level of maturity and independence to postpone their marriage.

His full message reads:

“Defer marriage until you have attained a requisite level of emotional sophistication and self-sufficiency!

As a young man from a disadvantaged background, it is imperative to prioritize your personal evolution and development before venturing into the intricate complexities of married life, which is replete with numerous distractions and responsibilities.

Be cautious not to be swayed by the transitory allurements and cacophonous diversions that surround you, for they may divert your attention from your long-term objectives and aspirations.

Remember that the allure of a beautiful woman, though captivating, is ephemeral, and there will always be an abundance of accomplished and virtuous women available at any time you are prepared to settle down.

By postponing marriage until you have achieved emotional maturity, financial stability, and intellectual growth, you will be better equipped to navigate the intricacies of married life with greater ease, wisdom, and resilience, thereby ensuring a harmonious and fulfilling union.

Marry Late… Yes, na me talk am!”

His message has brought some criticism from some lawyers who claimed he has no locus standi to give marital advice given that he himself is not married.

Meanwhile, in his response to those lawyers, Hon. Chukwuma claimed they are committing a fallacy he called “argumentum ad hominem” which means “leaving the matter and attacking the person”.

In his response, he narrated :

“A cursory examination of Barr. L. N. Ilobuno and Barr. Ignatius Machie’s comments reveal nothing short of astonishing, given their purported origin from legal practitioners who have spent five to six years studying law at the university level, followed by additional years of legal training, and have subsequently been called to the Nigerian Bar.

It is deeply disconcerting to observe that, at this stage in their professional careers, they remain unfamiliar with the fundamental concept of argumentum ad hominem fallacy. One cannot help but question how such legal professionals manage to construct coherent and logical arguments in a court of law, a skill that is ostensibly a cornerstone of their profession.

So, I must be married before I become aware that the economy is bad and people need to get something doing before entering into marriage especially when they come from poor background? So, I must be married before I know that it’s demeaning for parents to run from pillar to post begging people for money before they could feed their children? So I should be married before I become aware that the society should be sanitized by encouraging individuals to get basic necessities and attain certain level of maturity before entering into marriage to avoid giving to the society untrained kids who will be dangerous to those they come across?

You could also rebuke priests who give marriage counseling, simply because they are single. I am disappointed that it’s even lawyers that are committing such fallacy; those who suppose to be at home with intricacies of logic.”

What is your take on his position?
