Birth Registration Vital For Government Benefits – Remi

The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerian parents to register their children’s birth with the National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure they can access essential government benefits and services.

Speaking during the official launch of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in Abuja, which included a UNICEF-backed commemorative birth certificate, Tinubu emphasized that proper birth registration is critical for ensuring that every Nigerian child has a legal identity and access to healthcare, education, and social security.

“This step is crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of providing a legal identity for all, including birth registration,” Tinubu said. “Without this, many children will remain unrecognized, missing out on vital services.”

Tinubu highlighted that many children under five are not registered with the NPC, noting that only 36% of births in Nigeria are recorded, leaving the rest without proper documentation.

UNICEF Representative Cristian Munduate praised the introduction of the electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) as a breakthrough, enabling accurate birth registration across the country.

The NPC Director General added that registering children gives them a digital identity and access to critical government programs.
