Lagos First Lady. Epe Council Chair Flags-Off Tuberculosis Screening Campaign

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. (Mrs) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Epe Local Government Chairman, Princess Surah Animashaun will tomorrow flag off 2-day tuberculosis screening campaign to reduce death among residents of the council area.

According to Princess Animashaun, the campaign is very necessary because lack of awareness has continued to pose threats to the residents of the council, the state and Nigeria at large.

Princess Animashaun stated this during a press conference organised to ushering in the 2-day campaign exercise, held at the Secretariat Chamber, Ita-Marun, Epe, Lagos State.

She said the event with the theme “End TB, Stop TB,” featuring, free blood pressure check, blood sugar screening, free check x-ray and free TB screening exercises, will be held at the Epe LG Primary Healthcare Centre, Epe.

She, however, enjoined residents of the council to converge en-masse for the tuberculosis, blood sugar screening, and others aimed at eliminating and controlling the spread of the scourge in the council, state and country at large.

The Chairperson also noted that her administration is committed to end the scourge of tuberculosis in the council area, noting the she prioritised health, bringing quality healthcare services to Epe’s residents.

She then charged the residents of the council, irrespective of tribe or religion to come out en-masse for the screening, saying that Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs, remains a significant public health concern.

She said “Those diseases are preventable and treatable, yet they continue to pose a threat due to a lack of awareness and access to medical services.

“So this screening and awareness campaign will not only provide our people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and their loved ones but also ensure that those affected receive the care and support they deserve.”

The Chairman lamented the rising scourge of tuberculosis and high blood pressure among many Nigerians, underscored the importance of the free screening programme in the local government council area of Lagos State.

She said that TB is a major public health concern in Nigeria and Epe is not immune, noting that the loved ones have been lost and families tore apart due to the scourge of the illness.

Princess explained that the health conditions are an infectious diseases, causing health burden due to complications associated with infection, such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.

She called on the media to assist in the dissemination of information on the screening exercise against TB to the public.
