FCT Police To Enforce Ban On Tinted Glasses, Covered Number Plates

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), FCT Command has said it would henceforth commence the enforcement of the ban on tinted glasses and covering of number plates.

The commissioner of police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, stated this while parading some suspects arrested for various crimes in the FCT yesterday.

The police commissioner said 296 vehicles had been impounded for violations such as the use of tinted glasses, driving with only one plate number, and the use of concealed or defaced number plates.

He also said police operatives have successfully foiled five ‘One Chance’ robbery operations, rescuing three victims who were abducted by these criminal elements, noting that “these achievements highlight the effectiveness of our proactive strategies and show the importance of public collaboration in ensuring the safety of all FCT residents.”

Recall that the force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated on Saturday in response to a query on social media, emphasising a law prohibiting tint use on vehicles.

He clarified that the ban enforcement was suspended due to a pause in the issuance of tint permits.

According to him, “There is a ban on it. It’s even a legal matter because there is a law on it. The police only suspended the enforcement of the law because we had suspended the issuance of the tint permit.”

He further explained that the police may exercise discretion in certain cases to investigate whether a vehicle with tinted windows is being used for criminal activities.

He also noted that the practice had been widely abused in the past.

Meanwhile, in a follow up statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, said: “For now, the use of tinted glasses on vehicles is prohibited. If your vehicle has tinted glasses, kindly remove them to avoid having your vehicle impounded by the police.”

Adding: “This is one of the measures implemented to combat the rising incidents of ‘one chance’ and other criminal activities in the FCT.”
