Insecurity: DELSU PGSAN Wants Gov. Oborevwori To Build Hostels For Students, Condemns Killing Of Ex-Student

The Postgraduate Students’ Association of Nigeria (PGSAN), Delta State University, Abraka, has called on the Delta State Government to consider building hostel accommodations within the campus for students.

This was contained in a statement on Thursday signed by Comr. Oviebemre Ohwovoriole and made available to Oasis Magazine.

According to him, the need for this project cannot be overemphasized

Recall that the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Samuel Asagba, on Wednesday directed students to stay indoors on Thursday following the reprisal attack of suspected kidnappers that left two, Marcus and Aroture, dead on Wednesday.

While commending the VC for the directive that students stay indoors, he said it made students safe as long as the issue continued in the community.

He called on Gov. Oborevwori to critically look into the area of hostel accommodations for students.

His words: “If there was enough hostel accommodations for students like it obtains in UNILORIN, UI and some other universities, there will be no need declaring a lecture free day because of insecurity.”

Adding: “Why the community would have been battling to solve the insecurity issue, academic activities would have continued in DELSU campuses unhindered.

“If the students were resident on campus, there will be no need for this loss in academic time. What if tomorrow was not a Muslim holiday it would have been students missing two academic days just to ensure that the insecurity issues are handled by security personnel before asking them to return for lectures.”

He continued: “We support and commend the DELSU Student Union Government (SUG) for joining the ‘kidnapping must end’ protest, saying it was for the good of the student.

Continuing, he said: “It is important that the government looks into this insecurity issue that has been troubling the university community making students as well as Indigenes uncomfortable as they go about their daily activities.

“This insecurity situation is affecting students in all ramifications.

“No parent wants to lose any child sent to DELSU.

“We want this issue tackled by the government so students can go back to their normal academic work and all that.”

Furthermore, he said “the incessant insecurity threat has made prospective postgraduate students to neglect their programmes,” just as he said that this “is not good for the university and the community at large.”

Meanwhile, he also condemned what he described as “the ruthless dispersing of peaceful protesters by security forces” engaged in the ‘kidnapping must end’ protest.

Continuing, the DELSU PGSAN president also condemned the gruesome killing of one Mr. Aruoture who just graduated from DELSU and waiting for his call up letter from NYSC.

The deceased who came to visit his friend, Marcus in Abraka, was abducted and killed alongside Marcus on Wednesday.

Furthermore, Ohwovoriole also thanked Prof. Asagba for the prompt decision directing students to stay indoors, saying this was geared towards the safety of the lives of students.
