Delta Poly Rector Underscores Importance Of Conferences
– As He Performs The Foundation laying Of ASUP Secretariat
The Rector, Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri has reiterated the importance of Conferences to the development of education and institutions.
He made this remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2nd ASUP National Conference with the theme, “leveraging emerging technological landscape and entrepreneurship skills for national development” held at the Chief James Onanefe Ibori auditorium.
Declaring the ceremony opened, Prof Biri stated that workers all over the world from the times of Karl Marx, Hegel are endangered species that are made strong by the Union. He therefore commended the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) DSPT Chapter for the initiative in putting up the conference that draws academics across the country to gather in the Polytechnic.
Professor Biri stated that his administration is
committed to academic freedom and excellence, stressing that conferences, inaugural lectures, colloquiums give institutions global visibility. He informed participants at the conference that the Polytechnic will be hosting the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) next year.
Leading a delegation of ASUP national executives and Zone D members on a courtesy visit to the Rector, the Coordinator, Comrade Dr. Richard Iloma thanked the Rector for giving approval for ASUP Zone D NEC meeting and conference to hold in the Polytechnic. He commended the Rector for spearheading massive infrastructural and academic developments in the Polytechnic. Dr. Iloma admonished the Rector to continue with his open door policy and liberality that have brought sustainable peace to the institution.
Also speaking during the visit, immediate past ASUP national president, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe while collaborating the remark of the Zone D coordinator, commended the Rector for being Union friendly.
The ASUP conference/Zone D NEC meeting marked another historical event in the Polytechnic as the Rector, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri performed the groundbreaking and foundation laying ceremony of the ASUP Secretariat. The Polytechnic have three Unions, ASUP, SSANIP and NASU and under the leadership of Professor Biri ASUP is the first Union to commence the building of their Secretariat.
The ASUP chapter chairman, Comrade Dr Henry Obeh speaking to newsmen after the events thanked the Rector for giving a level playing field for the Union to thrive in the Polytechnic. According to him, “I have received several calls and commendations from the national body and different chapters. They saw and heard what happened in our Polytechnic, and they have been commending the Rector for his humane and friendly nature “.
