DELSU Matriculates 9498 Students, As VC Cautions Against Cultism, Internet Fraud, Others

Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, on Saturday held its 2025/2026 Matriculation Ceremony for newly admitted students.

Speaking during the occasion that took place at the Convocation Arena, Site III (Abraka, Main Campus), Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Samuel Asagba, congratulated the matriculating students for not only attaining another important milestone in their academic pursuit, but for successfully scaling through the difficult hurdles of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Post University Matriculation Screening exercise, adding that “of the tens of thousands of candidates who applied for admission to the University, only nine thousand, four hundred and ninety-eight (9,498)students were admitted.

Giving the breakdown of those admitted, he said that the institution admitted 171 to the Faculty of Agriculture, 804 to the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, 952 to the Faculty of Arts, 5 to the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, 731 to the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, 131 to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and 340 to the Faculty of Computing.

According to him, the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies got 633 students, Faculty of Dentistry, 10, Faculty of Education, 1,385, Faculty of Engineering, 592, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, 21, Faculty of Management Sciences, 1.100, Faculty of Law, 118, Faculty of Pharmacy, 114, Faculty of Science, 1,736 and Faculty of the Social Sciences, 660.

Speaking further, he urged the new students to always remember that they are the few privileged ones among the candidates that applied for admission.

Continuing, he hinted that The Times Higher Education (THE) in its 2026 ranking, ranked DELSU as the 4h best State University in Nigeria, 12th overall best University in Nigeria, and the best State University in the South-South and South-East geo-political zones of Nigeria.

Adding: “It has continued to exude a robust town-and-gown interaction in the pursuit of its primary objectives, which has also resulted inharmonious relationship,” saying that “the result of this is the turning out of responsible graduates who have continued to contribute positively not only to the Nigerian society, but the world at large,” just as he gave the credit for this success to the Delta State Government that is committed to the overall well-being of the university.

He said further: “Delta State University has distinguished itself as one of the Centres of academic excellence and has become an attraction for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions. This has been largely due to its track record of maintaining smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar over the years It is worthy to note that Delta State University at present, has seventeen (17) Faculties with one hundred and nine (109) academic programmes, in addition to one Institute of Education and a Business School. The DELSU Business School is situated at Asaba, the capital of the state.

“Given the trends in contemporary times, we are setting machinery in place for the introduction of more robust programmes to cater for the academic need of this generation. However, this University has continued to excel among Universities in Nigeria, having secured full accreditation status for all its academic programmes.”

To the students, he said: “While you are here as students, you need to be diligent in your academic work and be honest in the pursuit of your dreams in Delta State University, Abraka. You must avoid being captives of the social media, which is a subtle distraction and time stealer.”

He also urged them to avoid actions that involve violence, cultism, yahoo plus and breach of the peace of the university.

“You are strongly advised to eschew examination malpractice, indecent dressing and any kind of action that is unbecoming of an undergraduate. As first year students, you must strive to deliberately protect your esteemed “gown” from the vagaries and hostilities of the town,” he warned.

In his words, “I, therefore, urge every one of you to shun all forms of vices that will jeopardize the successful completion of your studies and the attainment of your life dream.”

Speaking further, he appreciated the Executive Governor and Visitor to the Delta State University, Abraka, Rt. Hon.(Elder) Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori and the Government of Deita State for the giant strides taken in the overall development of the University.

“On our part, we will remain focused in our pursuit of academic excellence. We will also pursue the prudent management of the meager resources of the University for its overall development,” he said.

Highlight of the event was the administration of the Matriculation Oath on the students by the Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio.
