Tinubu’s Intervention Forces Rivers Lawmakers To Suspend Impeachment Of Fubara
Tension eased in Rivers on Thursday as the Rivers State House of Assembly suddenly suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The climbdown followed the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, halting what had rapidly evolved into a high-stakes political showdown.
The decision was reached during plenary at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt, bringing temporary calm to the escalating power tussle in Rivers State.
Earlier in its first sitting of 2026, the lawmakers had fired the first salvo by initiating impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.
The allegations reportedly included the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval, among other charges.
