UNIBEN: Renowned Mathematician, Prof. Sunday Omosigho, To Deliver 21st Valedictory Lecture

BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — The University of Benin is set to host a landmark academic event as Professor Sunday Ewansiha Omosigho (FORS), a distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Operational Research, delivers the 21st Valedictory Lecture of the institution.

The lecture, titled “Nigerian Stochastic Economy: Pathways to Progress,” is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone in a career that has spanned over four decades of academic excellence and national service.

The Lecture: Addressing National Economic Volatility

In this capstone presentation, Professor Omosigho will apply the rigorous principles of Stochastic Processes and Operational Research to the complexities of the Nigerian economy. A “stochastic” system is one defined by randomness and uncertainty—a fitting descriptor for the current global and local economic climate.

The lecture promises to provide a mathematical blueprint for navigating these uncertainties. Professor Sunday Omosigho’s journey is a testament to the power of intellectual rigor and dedication. Born in Benin City on April 1, 1956, he returns to the podium on his 70th birthday to share his final formal address as a faculty member of the University of Benin.

Academic Pedigree

Professor Omosigho’s academic foundation is world-class. He began his journey at the College of Education, Abraka, earning a Distinction in Mathematics (1976), followed by a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Ibadan (1980). His pursuit of excellence led him to the United Kingdom, where he obtained:

• M.Sc. in Operational Research from the University of Sussex (1982).
• Ph.D. in Operational Research from Lancaster University (1985).
• MBA from the University of Benin (1994), further bridging the gap between pure mathematics and business logic.

A Legacy of Leadership and Excellence

Promoted to the rank of Professor in 2004, his contributions to the University of Benin have been foundational. He has served in nearly every significant administrative capacity, including:

• Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences (2014–2018).
• Head of the Department of Mathematics (multiple terms).
• Chairman of the University of Benin Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee.

His research, comprising over 60 publications in high-impact journals, focuses on Operational Research and Stochastic Processes. His mentorship has shaped generations of mathematicians, notably receiving the NUC Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Award for supervising the best PhD thesis in the Physical Sciences within the Nigerian University System in 2008.

A Fellow of the Operational Research Society (FORS), UK, and a member of various international scholarly bodies, Professor Omosigho is recognized globally as an expert assessor and external examiner. Beyond the classroom, he is a Priest in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Diocese of Benin, embodying a rare blend of scientific inquiry and spiritual leadership. He is happily married to Mrs. Grace Ehizogie Omosigho, and they are blessed with children.
