DELSU Inducts 18th Set Of Medical Doctors, As VC Announces Upgrade Of Medical Facilities

Delta State University (DELSU) has officially graduated a new set of medical doctors during its 18th induction and oath-taking ceremony which held recently at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III, DELSU, Abraka.

The event was graced by principal officers of the university, distinguished figures from the medical profession and proud family members of the inductees as well as invited guests from within and outside the university community.

In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, congratulated the twenty-one inductees for successfully navigating the intellectual demands, emotional resilience, and personal sacrifices required in medical training, and for attaining the distinguished milestone of qualifying as medical doctors. Professor Asagba also commended parents and sponsors of the medical graduands for their support and encouragement during the medical training of the inductees. He also expressed appreciation to the Provost, Deans, Heads of Departments, academic staff and clinical trainers of the College of Health Sciences for their commitment and dedication to training the medical graduands.

The Vice Chancellor expressed optimism that the inductees would contribute to national development and strengthen the nation’s healthcare system. Professor Asagba in conclusion announced that his administration would build and adequately equip four mega laboratories which will be used for the training of her medical students. Professor Asagba also announced the offer of automatic employment to the best medical graduands, Miss Ogheneyoreme Uzuezi Abogo.

DELSU’s Provost of College of Health Sciences, Professor Emmanuel Odokuma, in his address welcomed all to the 18th induction and oath taking ceremony of qualified medical doctors of the University. He also expressed appreciation to all those who contributed to the successful training of the medical graduands. Professor Odokuma thereafter thanked the Vice Chancellor of DELSU for all the support the College has received from the University’s management to achieve its successes.

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Professor Fatima Kyari, extended her congratulations to the newly inducted doctors for successfully completing their medical training. Professor Kyari, who was represented by Professor Patrick Igbigbi, advised the inductees to be wary of infamous conduct as medical doctors. She then proceeded to administer the Hippocratic oath to the medical graduands.

Guest Lecturer at the induction ceremony and Professor of Jurisprudence and Rhetoric, Professor Oghenemaro Festus Emiri (SAN), while speaking on the topic: “Medico-Legal Responsibilities of A Doctor: Protecting Your Patient and Your Licence”, informed the newly inducted doctors that their Hippocratic Oath places upon them the fidelity of patient care which assures both professional integrity and social trust.

Professor Emiri further assured the inductees that consistent adherence to ethical and legal standards safeguards patients and preserves the credibility attached to the medical license.

He cautioned the new doctors that neglect of duty or deviation from accepted practice can attract disciplinary consequences, professional disgrace, and potential loss of the right to practice. Professor Emiri then advised the inductees to remain mindful of their identity and the principles they uphold, declaring that the profession offers both reward and responsibility.

The Valedictorian, Miss Ogheneyoreme Uzuezi Abogo, in her speech appreciated everyone who moulded them one way or the other. She assured that they would be worthy ambassadors of the University and the medical profession. Other highlights of the ceremony were special rendition by Music Department, group photographs with Principal Officers of the University and the announcement of prizes to the best graduating medical doctors in different medical courses.

Dignitaries that were present at the ceremony included Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Prof Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo, the University Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio represented by Mrs Juliet Unuafe, the University Bursar, Mrs Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa represented by Mr Franklin Itiveh, the University Librarian, Dr Josephine Eruterio Onohwakpor represented by Dr Voilet Ikolo, Provosts, Deans, Directors, staff and students of the university.
