2027 Elections: INEC Confirms Submission Of Membership Registers By All 22 Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have successfully submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.

According to the Commission, the submission was completed as of 8 May 2026, ahead of the extended deadline granted following consultations with political parties over concerns relating to the initial timetable for the 2027 general elections.

INEC explained that the adjustment became necessary after stakeholders raised issues during a meeting held on 24 March 2026 regarding the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the elections. Following the engagement, the Commission had shifted the deadline for submission of party registers from 21 April 2026 to 10 May 2026, in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the schedule for party primaries.

The Commission further clarified that political parties were permitted to conduct their primaries between 23 April and 30 May 2026, while the submission of membership registers was required not later than 21 days before each party’s primaries.

INEC stated that all registered parties complied within the extended timeframe and assured that the submitted registers will undergo proper verification in accordance with the law.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in the 2027 general polls.
