Comrade Umukoro Urges Urhobo Nation To Honour Senator Omo-Agege’s Political Achievements

Urhobo youth leader, social commentator and public affairs advocate, Comrade Efenena Umukoro, has called on the Urhobo Nation to celebrate and honour the political achievements of former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, describing him as the highest-ranking Urhobo political office holder in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Umukoro argued that no Urhobo person has occupied any of the nation’s top constitutional offices, including President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, or Chief Justice of Nigeria, since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

According to him, Omo-Agege’s tenure as Deputy Senate President remains the highest constitutional office attained by an Urhobo individual at the federal level during the period.

“Whether you support him politically or not, history is history. Respect is earned, and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has written his name in the political history of the Urhobo Nation,” Umukoro stated.

He lamented what he described as a tendency among some Urhobo people to criticize rather than celebrate those who attain significant positions in public service, urging the ethnic nationality to rally around its accomplished sons and daughters.

“The Urhobo Nation must learn to celebrate its own. We cannot continue to pull down those who have reached heights no other Urhobo person has attained in the Nigerian political system,” he said.

Umukoro further maintained that attacks on Omo-Agege should be viewed as an affront to the collective pride and aspirations of the Urhobo people, while emphasizing the need to separate political disagreements from recognition of achievements.

He urged Urhobo people to remain united in promoting and supporting individuals who have elevated the profile of the ethnic nationality on the national stage.

“Let us disagree with one another politically, but let us never forget to honour those who have elevated the Urhobo name on the national stage,” he added.
