DSS Warns Of Planned School Abductions In Edo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted security agencies in Edo State yo an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren, particularly in communities across the Edo North Senatorial District.

The warning was contained in an intelligence communication dated June 5, 2026, and addressed to the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benin City.

According to the document, intelligence available to the security agency indicated that suspected bandits were considering a shift in strategy after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals reportedly failed to yield substantial financial returns.

The intelligence report alleged that two suspected bandits, identified only as Bawa and Nuhu, discussed plans to target schoolchildren in Edo North, believing that such abductions would attract greater public attention and increase the possibility of obtaining large ransom payments or concessions.

The memo further stated that on June 4, one Emmanuel Momidu, 25, was apprehended after he was allegedly observed conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

Security officials have not publicly disclosed whether the suspect has been formally charged or whether investigations have established any direct connection between him and the alleged kidnapping plot.

In response to the intelligence, the DSS advised security agencies to strengthen protective measures around schools and other educational institutions across the state, with particular emphasis on vulnerable communities in Edo North.

The agency recommended the deployment of security personnel to schools considered at risk, enhanced surveillance operations, and increased collaboration among security agencies, local vigilante groups, hunters and community-based security networks.

It also called for intensified patrols around educational facilities and vulnerable communities as part of efforts to deter any potential attacks.

The alert comes amid growing concerns over the safety of schools in parts of Nigeria following a series of mass abductions of students in recent years, particularly in northern states.
