Edo Kidnap Suspect Claims Gang Rented Guns From Community Security Chief

A suspected kidnapper arrested by the Edo State Police Command, Marvelous Isaac, has alleged that the firearms used by his gang during a recent abduction operation in Benin City were rented from a community security chief identified as Liberty.

Isaac, 32, who hails from Akwa Ibom State but resides on Ekenwa Road in Benin City, was arrested in connection with the June 14 kidnapping of a woman at the Vegetable Market in the Edo State capital.

According to the police, the victim was released after the payment of an N8 million ransom.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, disclosed that operatives of the Intelligence Response Team apprehended the suspect following intelligence gathered on the incident. He added that another gang member, identified as Precious, was killed during a gun duel with security operatives.

Police recovered an RX 350 Lexus SUV allegedly used in the operation, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle, and N2.25 million suspected to be proceeds of the crime.

Speaking during interrogation, Isaac claimed he received N1.5 million as his share of the ransom. He further alleged that the gang’s weapons were obtained through Precious from a community security officer in Oredo Community known as Liberty.

“It was Precious that went to the CSO because he owns the guns. His name is Liberty,” Isaac said, alleging that the security chief rents out firearms to individuals.

The suspect disclosed that four persons participated in the operation, including himself, Precious, Wisdom, and another member allegedly brought from Delta State.

He further claimed that there were several firearms in Liberty’s possession and that the weapons were routinely rented out to others.

According to police accounts, the kidnappers stormed the market area in broad daylight, intercepted an SUV, and shot at one of its front tyres before dragging the driver out of the vehicle. While attempting to force both occupants into their vehicle, the male victim escaped. The woman also tried to flee but was reportedly chased, captured, and taken away by the gang.

Reacting to the arrest, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, commended the police and other security agencies for their swift response, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and cult-related crimes across the state.

The police have yet to publicly respond to the allegations made against the community security chief named by the suspect.
