Governor Soludo Mourns Passing Of Distinguished Anambra Son, Lt. Gen. Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, describing him as one of Anambra State’s most distinguished sons whose service brought honour to both the state and Nigeria.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, Governor Soludo said he received the news of Obiakor’s death with profound grief. The retired military officer passed away on May 27, 2026, after a brief illness.

The governor noted that the late General Obiakor, who hailed from Awka South Local Government Area, had an illustrious military career marked by exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to national and international service.

Born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Obiakor joined the Nigerian Army after attending the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 10th Regular Course in 1971. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps in 1973.

Throughout his military career, he held several strategic positions, serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and later as Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters. Governor Soludo praised his outstanding contributions to the Nigerian Army and his role in strengthening national security.

The governor also highlighted Obiakor’s remarkable international service, particularly his appointment as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia. He further noted that in 2008, Obiakor made history as the first African to be appointed United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations in New York, a position that underscored his global reputation and expertise in peacekeeping.

According to Soludo, the late military officer was a true patriot, disciplined leader, and global icon whose commitment to peace and security extended beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“Anambra State has lost a rare gem, a visionary leader, and a source of inspiration to many,” the governor said.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Obiakor family, the Nigerian Army, and all those affected by the loss, while praying for the peaceful repose of the late general’s soul.
