Jesse: Chief Jailed 20 Years After Faking Kidnap To Extort Wife, Family
JESSE— A community chief in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Igho America Israel, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of staging his own kidnap in an elaborate scheme to extort money from his wife and relatives.
The convict allegedly orchestrated the hoax in February 2026, creating a false impression that he had been abducted by armed men. His family was subsequently thrown into panic as ransom demands were made under the guise of his captivity.
However, investigators later discovered that the so-called victim was in fact coordinating the entire scheme himself from a hotel hideout.
The plot was uncovered following a detailed investigation by security operatives, who traced the ransom communications to a hotel location. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found the chief living freely, with no evidence of captivity. He was immediately arrested and later charged to court.
Before the truth emerged, his sudden disappearance had triggered widespread speculation within the community. Initial suspicions were wrongly directed at his wife and her former husband, a Canada-based businessman who had visited Nigeria during the festive season.
Police, however, later established that the entire incident was self-orchestrated, with the alleged intent of extorting money from his wife and the visiting ex-husband.
