Delta Police Begin Sensitisation Ahead Of Liquor Licensing Law Enforcement

The Delta State Police Command has commenced sensitisation of stakeholders ahead of the enforcement of the Liquor (Licensing) Law of Delta State.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, convened a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for police commands across the country to enforce applicable laws regulating the sale and consumption of liquor.

The meeting was aimed at sensitising relevant stakeholders, clarifying the purpose of the exercise and promoting compliance ahead of enforcement in Delta State.

Speaking at the meeting, CP Oyeniyi said the exercise was not intended to frustrate legitimate businesses or impose undue hardship on operators, but to enforce existing laws in the interest of public safety.

According to him, proper regulation would enable relevant authorities to effectively monitor establishments where liquor is sold and consumed and ensure that such premises are not used for criminal activities.

He added that the exercise was aimed at crime prevention and control, as well as ensuring the safety of residents across the state.

The Commissioner noted that a decent and properly regulated environment would contribute to a safer and more peaceful society.

Providing the legal perspective, a representative of the Delta State Ministry of Justice explained the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Law and stressed the need for collaboration among relevant stakeholders in addressing issues surrounding the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.

The Executive Director (Operations), Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Prof. Frank Onyisi Nwugo, PhD, Esq., observed that awareness of existing legal requirements remained limited.

He therefore advocated wider sensitisation across the 25 Local Government Areas to ensure that affected operators were adequately informed of the requirements of the law.

A representative of the Secretary to the State Government also appealed to hoteliers, liquor dealers and other affected operators to familiarise themselves with the law and ensure compliance.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Delta State Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Lands, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Delta State Internal Revenue Service and Local Government Councils across the state.

Also present were the Chairman, Nigeria Hoteliers Association, Delta State, hoteliers, wine and liquor dealers and other stakeholders.

The Police Command called on operators of affected establishments to cooperate with relevant authorities and comply with the provisions of the law.

It reiterated that the exercise was focused on lawful regulation, crime prevention and the safety and security of residents of Delta State.
