Oasis Magazine Spelling Bee Competition: DELSU Secondary School Wins
Oasis Magazine (OM) has successfully held the 2017 edition of the annual ‘Spelling Bee’ competition for secondary schools in Ethiope East and Ukwuani Local Government Areas.
This event which took place at Abraka Grammar School, Abraka recently, saw DELSU Secondary School, Abraka clinching the first spot, while Perpetual Secondary School, Obiaruku and Hosanna Christian Academy, Obiaruku came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The publisher, OM, Daniel Dafe, during his welcome address, expressed surprise at the poor response to the call for sponsorship of the programme, adding that this reflects the mindset of many of the well-to-dos in Delta State, who pay little or no attention to the development of the educational sector.
He commended Sir Dele Omenogor, Chairman, Konum Farms, Amai; Chief Harrison Jessa, CEO, Jessa Global Oils, Abraka; Mr. Festus Eghruwdje, a community leader in Agbarha and CSP Kpokpo Douye, Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Abraka Division for their financial support towards the success of the programme.
Dafe urged corporations in Delta State to support the competition, and give it the needed support, saying this can be a springboard to put Delta State ahead of other states in the country, since education plays a major role in emancipating a people.
On his part, the Chief Inspector of Education, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Mr. Michael Ogefere represented by Mrs. Evelyn Emakpor, commended the participants for the brave show of intelligence while the contest lasted, urging the losers to put in more effort next time for better results.
In the same vein, a representative of the Ministry of Education, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Mrs. Josephine Ekpekirarhe appreciated the Management of OM for putting the programme together, adding that the competition gives students the opportunity to get challenged by other intelligent students from other schools, thereby building them up academically.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of prizes to the three best performing schools.
A total of 16 schools participated at the finals and over 50 schools during the preliminary stages that held in several locations in Ethiope East and Ukwuani Local Government Areas.
