DELSU: Osula Daniel’s Rustication, Arrest Is A Case Of Oppression— Family Members

Family members of Osula Daniel Enahoro, a 500 Level student of the Department of Civil Engineering, Delta State University, Oleh Campus, have described the rustication, arrest and detention of Daniel by the State CID, Okpanam as a case of oppression.
Speaking with Oasis Magazine, OM, during a phone conversation, a family member, Joy Osula wondered why Daniel’s outspokenness got him into the mess, saying that he is innocent of any crime.
She said: “Our leaders must learn to do things right. My brother likes things done right. He cried out in his own way and now he has been unjustly punished.”
On his part, Daniel’s elder brother, Kess, disclosed that attempts are been made to release him, adding that they were told that he would be released when they provide a surety, even though they are yet to be informed what his offence was.
“They have seen that Daniel has no backup,” he said.
According to reports yet to be verified, Daniel’s trails began in his final year when the Head of Department, Mr. Hillary extorted money from his students for the purpose of facilitating the execution of their project.  Daniel his said to have reluctantly paid tge money.
A post on Daniel’s Facebook page showed that a test which saw him scoring the highest was re-taken to punish him, which eventually resulted to his failure of the course. This course we learnt was lectured by Mr. Hillary.
Daniel is said to have reported to relevant authorities, but nothing was done.
According to Daniel, the university management set-up a panel that met with him severally to address the issue, but nothing positive came out of this gesture.
The management asked Daniel to spend an extra year in school, even though he (Daniel) argued that he did not fail the course.
OM gathered that the HOD alleged that Daniel threatened him several times, which led to several invitations to Daniel from the DSS for questioning.
Daniel, we learnt was rusticated in his 500 level for breaching his matriculation oath. His offence we gathered was sharing his ordeal on his Facebook timeline.
Daniel’s rustication occurred after he paid his fees for the extension to re-seat for the said course.
An alleged chat between the Commissioner for Higher Education and a sympathizer of Daniel’s misfortune had the Commissioner saying that “the case is a bad case,” adding that “it was discussed on Monday” and mentioning that “the boy is still posting on FB.”
A chat with an official of the Student Union Government of the institution who does not want his name mentioned said that Daniel was misled.
According to him, he was supposed to write to the university management rather than going public with the issue.
“The HOD and Daniel were invited to a panel and both questioned.”
On if Daniel deserved the punishment meted on him, the SUG official said: “The school has regulations. Ignorance is not an excuse. He should not have defamed the university.”
He however said that the present SUG leaders will not sit down and allow any student of the university have his or her rights trampled on under any guise, while denying a total grasp of the issues playing out regarding the issues surrounding his arrest.
At the time of fielding this report, a friend of Daniel based in Asaba hinted this reporter that the IPO in charge of the case at the State Intelligence Unit of the State CID has agreed to Daniel’s bail after a close relative or a friend of his resident in Asaba stands as a surety.
He also deduced that from the IPO’s statements, the arrest was influenced by the HOD. Osula was released yesterday and claimed that he was asked by police officials to keep sealed lips on his ordeal in the cell.
The Dean of Students, Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Augustus Atubi was yet to pick the calls put across to him, and the Delta State Police PRO, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, yet to respond to our text message on the matter.
